Bus service The new bus
timetables took effect on 19 February. The County Council has produced a
timetable booklet which is available from local shops, post offices,
libraries and other outlets. Unfortunately they have failed to cater for
passengers travelling between Langford and Bedford who are left to search
through 7 pages of the timetables to plan their journeys. We have extracted the
information from these pages to
produce a consolidated Langford <-> Bedford timetable. Unfortunately, due to
lack of a through service, this timetable is necessarily complicated as
connections to and from Bedford are made at Biggleswade, Henlow and Shefford
at various times of day. |
|
|
Bus service From 18 February 2007
the existing bus services routes M3 and 200 respectively will be withdrawn
from the village. They will be replaced by a single service with route number 171. This will run
between Biggleswade and Hitchin only. There will be no through service to
either Shefford or Bedford. Passengers for Shefford will have to change at
Henlow and passengers to Bedford will have to change either at Henlow or
Biggleswade. There will be no evening or Sunday service. |

On Tuesday 9
January a public meeting is being held at the village hall to discuss the
proposed bus cuts. All those affected are invited to attend to hear
representatives of the County Council, the bus company and others who will
explain what is happening and how the problem might be overcome. Note that
originally this meeting was advertised as taking place at the church hall but
due to the overwhelming interest, the larger village hall will now host the
meeting. |

Local government restructuring The government has produced a White
Paper asking local authorities in shire counties to put forward proposals
for moving to unitary authorities. This affects 4 councils in Bedfordshire:
Bedfordshire County, Bedford Borough, Mid Beds District and South Beds
District. There are four options offered: 1.
A unitary county based upon the existing
Bedfordshire County Council boundaries.
2.
Two unitary councils - based upon the
existing boundaries of (1) Bedford Borough and (2) Mid and South Beds
District Councils combined. 3.
Two unitary councils - based upon the
existing boundaries of (1) Luton and South Beds combined and (2) Bedford
Borough and Mid Beds combined. 4.
Enhanced two tier - retain the individual
identities of the 4 councils in the existing two tier County area but with a
very high degree of merged back office and front line services. The local authorities have until 25 January to submit their
proposals to government. Residents are invited to discuss their views on the
restructuring with councillors. |

hosting a public meeting on 9 January 2007 at the Church Hall to discuss the
matter. |

Bus Service (updated 31 January 2006) From 6 March 2006 the 171 Stagecoach bus
service through the village will be replaced it with a new service numbered
M3 (or M4). The service will still be between Hitchin and Bedford and follows
almost the same route as the present 171. However a fleet of brand new buses
will provide it. These will be modern single-decker buses with low floor
access in line with current disability legislation. There will still be an
hourly service in each direction, but the timetables will be significantly
simplified. No longer will there be diversions to cater for school journeys
as school buses will then be entirely separate from normal scheduled
services. Stagecoach intends to deliver new timetables to every household in
the village prior to the start of the new service. The proposed new timetables that apply
from 6 March are here. The
adjoining Bedford to Hitchin 181/182 routes are being given a similar
facelift. Although they do not directly serve Langford, they may well prove
to be of significant interest due to the improved connection they can provide
from the village to Bedford. Also they are of interest to neighbouring
villages. We are therefore displaying this adjoining service also. The information in these timetables has
been provided by Stagecoach and any detailed enquiries should be taken up
with them. |
